A recent shipment of 4000 handbags from China to New Zealand had methamphetamine inside small silica gel sachets in the bags, Customs says.

In total there was 30kg of methamphetamine worth an estimated $30 million in the handbags.

The shipment arrived by air freight from China and each handbag had between two and five sachets inside.

"This creative concealment shows that criminals will go to great lengths to try and smuggle drugs," says Customs investigations manager Maurice O'Brien.

Last week Customs disclosed it had found 35kg of cocaine stuffed inside a diamante-encrusted horse's head that was mailed from Mexico, which was the country's largest cocaine seizure.

That was weeks after a record-breaking $496m worth of methamphetamine was found in Northland.
