The New Zealand Cycle Trail was used by around a million people last year and generated about $37 million in economic benefits for local communities, Prime Minister John Key says.

The trail was Mr Key's brainchild and work on it began soon after National came to power in 2008.

He says an independent cost benefit analysis shows that for every dollar spent, about $3.55 of economic benefit is being generated.

"Around 1.3 million people visited the 22 Great Rides in 2015," he said on Monday.

"The majority of those were Kiwis, with international visitors making up 13.5 per cent, or 114,000 users."
