The parents of a five-year-old girl accidentally left in a Hamilton car yard are thrilled to have their daughter back and safe following a sleepless night of searching.

Gloria Inoke was reported missing on Tuesday night and found early on Wednesday morning by two men passing the car yard in Frankton - 5km away and across the Waikato River from her family home in Fairfield.

While her parents spent an emotional and sleepless night searching and feared the disappearance was suspicious, on Wednesday Gloria's father, Allen Inoke, told media he had accidentally left his daughter in the back of a courtesy car he had dropped off, not realising she was in the vehicle.

He said he thought Gloria was with her mother, Adi, and the pair didn't realise the child was missing until 9pm.

"I parked the car there and the salesperson parked the car, moved it to park it properly and he didn't see her," he told Fairax.

"She had jumped in the boot - there's a curtain in the boot of the Honda Airwave."

He said while the car was locked, Gloria managed to get outside and was wandering around the yard in the morning.

"I am so happy," Ms Inoke said

Kiwi New Cars owner Chris Chan told NZ Newswire Mr Inoke had dropped a courtesy car at the yard at about 5.30pm on Tuesday night and left.

Because of the time the car was dropped off, it was not checked before the yard closed, he said.

Mr Chan said two young men on their way to work had noticed the girl wandering inside the gate of the car yard before it had opened for the morning.

Police said Gloria had undergone a medical check and was found to be fine.
