One Lotto player is $44 million richer after claiming the record-breaking jackpot.

In the "must be won" draw on Wednesday night, the player from Dairy Flat, north of Auckland, won the Powerball First Division outright.

The winning ticket was sold at Dairy Flat Food Mart and Liquor.

"With the largest jackpot ever on offer in New Zealand, Kiwis had even more to play for this week," Lotto NZ general manager of corporate communications Emilia Mazur said.

"People love to imagine what they would do if they won Powerball and now one lucky player is about to find out."

The Strike jackpot went to one player, who will take home $358,175.

Fourteen others will get a $66,667 share of the First Division prize.

More than 2.3 million tickets were entered in the draw.

The previous biggest Lotto prize given to a single winner was the $36 million won by a Masterton family in June 2009.
