Local media are reporting that the suspect in a stand-off with Dallas police has shot himself.

A suspect engaged in an armed stand-off with police in Dallas, Texas, has shot himself, according to local media.

The report has not been confirmed by city officials.

Police said the man, suspected to be one of the snipers in the shootings that killed five police officers, was barricaded in a parking garage and had told them he had placed several bombs there and in downtown Dallas.

The suspect had continued to exchange gunfire with police officers during approximately 45 minutes of negotiation, and had said "the end is coming".

In addition to the suspect barricaded in the parking garage, three other suspects were in custody, including a woman who was arrested in the garage and two others who were travelling on the highway in a Mercedes.

Around 100 officers had been deployed in downtown Dallas during a protest against police violence following the recent deaths of two black citizens at the hands of police officers in Louisiana and Minnesota.

Six officers and a member of the public were wounded.
