Damage no barrier as pair rescue daughter

A route that was impassable by car proved no barrier to a Christchurch couple who went on a mission to rescue their daughter from earthquake-stuck Waiau.

The 7.5-magnitude quake forced Denise Johnson and her baby out of their house in the North Canterbury town.

Ms Johnson's parents drove the two hours from Christchurch but were then blocked by a slip, Newshub reported.

The pair got out and walked, going across the damaged bridge over the Waiau river.

"They had to sleep in the car at the neighbours last night," mum Cheryl Hunt said.

"They're be pleased to get home with nana and granddad today."

Ms Johnson said there was no way she would be returning to the Waiau property.

"We'll get what we can out, but we won't be going back in there."
