Former All Black Dan Carter has reportedly returned to New Zealand for a holiday after being caught drink driving in France.

The New Zealand rugby great has apologised and says he is prepared to face legal consequences after pulled over driving nearly twice the legal limit near the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

"No excuses - I made a massive error of judgment and have let down my club, my fans and most importantly my family," Carter wrote in a social media post after a French magazine L'Equipe broke the story on Friday.

He has since returned to New Zealand for a pre-planned holiday, according to TVNZ.

The 34-year-old moved to France in 2015 to play for Paris club Racing 92.
