Dangerous chemical spill in Auckland

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 14/10/2016

The Fire Service is working to keep a chemical that has spilled in Auckland away from ignition sources.

Emergency services were called to BOC Gases at 970 Great South Rd in Penrose just before 7pm on Friday.

The chemical that has spilled is carbide, a Fire Service spokesman says.

Fire crews are working to keep the chemical away from water because when the two are mixed it can turn into an acetylene gas, which is volatile.

Hazmat specialists are among the 30 firefighters at the scene.

There were no reports of injuries.

Police have cordoned off the area around the spill.
