New Zealand's involvement at the US Open is over after Marcus Daniell lost his third-round men's doubles match in New York.

Daniell and American Brian Baker went down 6-3 7-6 to fourth seeds Jamie Murray of Great Britain and Bruno Soares of Brazil.

After having their serve broken twice in the first set, Daniell and Baker were solid throughout the second before losing a tense tiebreaker 9-7.

It is the third time Daniell, 26 has reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament. The others were last year at Wimbledon and this year at the French Open, helping boost his doubles world ranking to 58th.

His next tournament destination is Christchurch, where New Zealand will host Pakistan in a Davis Cup tie next week.
