NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 25/05/2016

New Zealand are off the mark at the French Open after Marcus Daniell notched a comfortable first-round men's doubles win.

Daniell and American partner Brian Baker beat Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and Russian Dimitri Tursinov 6-3 6-2 in less than an hour in Paris.

Their next opponents are 11th seeds Henri Kontinen of Finland and Australian John Peers.

Auckland 26-year-old Daniell is playing his fifth grand slam tournament.

He has suffered two first-round exits, including at Roland Garros last year, with his best performance a run to the last-16 at Wimbledon in 2015 with Brazil's Marcelo Demoliner.

New Zealand's Michael Venus and his Croatian partner Mate Pavic lost their first-round match on Tuesday.

A third Kiwi, Artem Sitak, is still to play.
