Danny Lee 11th at Players Championship

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 15/05/2016

Danny Lee's roller-coaster third round has left him in contention for a sizeable pay day at Players Championship in Florida.

Lee surged from 22nd to 11th place on six-under thanks to an even-par 72 at the TPC Sawgrass course in Ponte Vedra Beach as many of his rivals struggled on the hard and fast greens.

Only seven golfers were under-par, led by American Ken Duke (65) and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (67), who share second place on 10-under with German Alex Cejka. They are four strokes behind world No.1 Jason Day after the Australian ground out a 73.

Lee rose into contention for a slice of the $US10.5 million ($NZ15.5 million) purse with successive birdies on the par-four holes at four, five and six.

However, two bogeys on the front nine were followed by double-bogey six on the par-four 10th.

Two further bogeys dropped him outside the top-20 before salvaging birdies on the 15th and 16th holes.

World No.37 Lee is coming off a ninth-placed finish at last week's Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina.
