The date has been sent for a civic memorial service in Wellington for Helen Kelly, the union leader who died from cancer on Friday aged 52.

The service will be held at the Michael Fowler Centre on October 28, Wellington mayor Justin Lester says.

The service is being organised by the Council of Trade Unions and Wellington City Council following consultation with Ms Kelly's family.

Ms Kelly was the first woman to lead the CTU, during which time she campaigned for pay equality, employment equity and safer workplaces.

After being diagnosed with terminal cancer in February 2015, she campaigned for access to medicinal cannabis.

Mr Lester says the service will give the community a chance to remember "a great fighter, a great campaigner for workers' rights, a great Wellingtonian".

"Helen Kelly was an outstanding woman. She always fought on behalf of people who needed a voice, was hugely principled, always put other people's interests ahead of her own and never compromised on her convictions," he said.

Tributes are continuing to flow for Ms Kelly on social media on Saturday.
