Date set for next census

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 30/06/2016

The next census will be held on March 6, 2018.

Statistics Minister Craig Foss has counted the days to go - 613.

The date was announced on Friday, the last one was held in 2013.

"The census provides the government, iwi, businesses and communities with robust and independent data that is invaluable for making smart, evidence-based decisions," Mr Foss said.

"The count in 2013 told us that if New Zealand was a village of 100 people, 24 were born overseas, 21 had a tertiary qualification, and two were machinery operators and drivers."

Mr Foss says says Statistics NZ is building new, responsive versions of the census forms, along with tablet and desktop versions, to make it as easy as possible for people to access and complete.

Paper forms will still be available.

"We're aiming for 70 per cent of forms to be completed online," he said.

"Collecting census data online means Statistics NZ can produce the counts and other information much, much faster."
