American tennis player Lauren Davis is the first player through to the ASB Classic semi-finals after defeating Barbora Strycova 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

The fourth-seeded Strycova got off to a disastrous start in Auckland, losing the first set after slumping to a 5-0 deficit and struggling to get her service game in order.

The Czech double-faulted twice as she was broken in her first service game, before being broken again in her second despite calm conditions.

She managed to snare one game back after a prolonged deuce period, but ultimately lost the first set 6-1 against an aggressive and accurate Davis.

The second set proved a tighter affair, with both players holding serve in the first six games before three consecutive breaks gave Davis a decisive 5-4 lead.

But the Florida-based player wasted her chance to serve for the match, broken again as the set drifted towards an inevitable tie-break.

In the tie-break, Strycova double-faulted at 2-2, allowing Davis to take control of the break with a 5-3 lead and go on to win 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in 104 minutes.
