Dawson misses semis at slalom World Cup

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/06/2016

Olympic slalom canoeist Mike Dawson has failed to advance to the semi-finals of a World Cup event in Italy but two other New Zealand men are through.

Dawson ran into difficulties twice on the energy-sapping natural whitewater course in Ivrea, finishing 58th out 69 paddlers in the first run and 37th out of 39 in the second.

It was a disappointing result for Dawson, who is contesting his second Olympics in Rio in August.

Compatriot Finn Butcher qualified with the 27th-fastest time in the first run of 92.49sec, which was more than 5sec slower than top qualifier Benjamin Renia of France.

Callum Gilbert, who was 45th in the first run, was eighth best in the second run to be among the 10 additional paddlers to reach the 40-man final.

New Zealand K1 women's hopefuls Jane Nicholas and Anna Higgins both missed out on the final while Nicholas also fell short in her C1 event.

Rio-bound paddler Luuka Jones is skipping the regatta and will race the second World Cup in Spain next week.
