De Bruin to lead new netball Stars

Former Silver Ferns defender Leana de Bruin will captain the Northern Stars in this year's inaugural domestic netball league.

De Bruin, who played over 100 Tests for New Zealand in a 13-year career, will lead the Stars with another former Silver Fern, midcourter Courtney Tairi, named as vice-captain.

The ANZ Premiership replaces the trans-Tasman netball league, which ended last year as New Zealand and Australia set up separate domestic competitions.

De Bruin, who turns 40 in July, will lead the Julie Hoornweg-coached new franchise in the six-team New Zealand league which begins in late March.

The teams meet in a pre-season tournament at Te Wananga o Raukawa in Otaki on March 10-12.
