Black Caps allrounder Colin de Grandhomme has earned his first Indian Premier League contract after being picked up late by the Kolkata Knight Riders.

De Grandhomme, 30, replaces West Indies allrounder Andre Russell, who is serving a one-year ban for a doping-code violation.

Kolkata, who already have New Zealand pace bowler Trent Boult on their books, say they recognise the match-winning potential of de Grandhomme.

His big-hitting has been impressive at domestic level for several seasons and it continued with several exciting international cameos this summer.

De Grandhomme also proved effective for New Zealand with his seam bowling when conditions were helpful.

Eleven Kiwis will contest the IPL starting this week.

The opening match on Wednesday pits New Zealand captain Kane Williamson's Sunrisers Hyderabad against a Royal Challengers Bangalore side possibly featuring pace bowler Adam Milne.

Kolkata's first game is on Friday against Brendon McCullum's Gujarat Lions.

Black Caps in the IPL:

Brendon McCullum (Gujarat Lions), Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan (Mumbai Indians), Corey Anderson (Delhi Daredevils), Adam Milne (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Martin Guptill and Matt Henry (Kings XI Punjab), Lockie Ferguson (Rising Pune Supergiants), Kolkata Knight Riders (Colin de Grandhomme and Trent Boult).
