NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/06/2016

Police are investigating the death of a 42-year-old man in Mt Wellington after a fight.

Police and St John ambulance staff found the man unconscious after they were called to Bernard Street at about 12.20am on Saturday, says Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Higson.

The man was treated, but died at the scene.

Police are looking for at least four men aged in their late teens to early 20s who were involved in an altercation with the victim.

"We want to talk to the people involved as they would be in the best position to tell us what happened and why.

"We also appeal to any witnesses or anybody who has information about this incident and those involved to contact police," Det Sen Sgt Higson said.

Media report the man had been drinking kava with friends who live in Bernard Street and was walking back to where he was staying when the incident occurred. The death was being treated as unexplained.

Police erected a tent over a crime scene in the middle of the road.

A post-mortem examination was to be carried out later on Saturday.
