An investigation is under way after a Lower Hutt man was found with severe head injuries and died in hospital.

James Whenuaroa, 53, died in Wellington Hospital last Saturday evening from injuries he sustained a week earlier.

He was found hurt at an Arlington Street apartment block shortly before midnight on June 17, a Saturday.

Police are investigating the circumstances that led to Mr Whenuaroa's death, including what caused his head injuries that night.

It's known he was in the Wellington CBD, between Manners Street and the Arlington Apartments, between 5.30pm and 11.50pm on the night but police want more detail and are asking people who saw him or were in the area to contact them.
