Defence Force staff off to Middle East

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/06/2016

The New Zealand Defence Force is sending more personnel as well as heavy lift aircraft to support the coalition operations in the Middle East.

The C-130H Hercules will transport freight as well as troops, primarily to Iraq and Afghanistan, between June and December as part of an Australian Defence Force Joint Task Force.

"Our missions in the Middle East support the international community's resolve to preserve security and stability in the region," NZDF Major General Tim Gall said on Friday.

"The upcoming mission will reflect that continuing commitment once again."

Up to 40 personnel will be sent to the Middle East where they'll join around 100 troops who are deployed at Camp Taji as part of an operation to train Iraqi troops.

It is a part of a two-year mission that has trained more than 5000 Iraqi troops so far.
