The Defence Force is getting $264m extra funding over the next four years.

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says it will deliver long-term certainty, and $106m will be spent on new equipment.

"This funding allows the Defence Force to concurrently undertake domestic, regional and international security tasks, giving it greater flexibility in the response options it can provide," he said.

There's an allocation of $25.4m towards the cost of the two-year mission in Iraq where New Zealand troops are helping train local forces to fight the Islamic State.
