New Zealand Defence Force personnel have begun the operation to unload a year's supplies for scientists in the Antarctic.

When they've finished, the 55 drivers and logistics specialists will reload the cargo ship Ocean Giant with waste and items for repair from the previous 12 months.

The NZDF's senior national officer in Antarctica, Lieutenant Commander Ross Hickey, says it will take at least a week to discharge the 3000 tonnes of supplies.

The cargo includes food and drink, two new snowmobiles, two tracked snow vehicles, engineering equipment, vehicle parts and timber.

About 5 per cent of the goods are earmarked for the New Zealand research facility at Scott Base, with the rest going to the US research centre at McMurdo Station.

Up to 220 NZDF personnel support Scott Base and McMurdo Station during the summer season.
