The cinema complex and part of the car park at the Queensgate Shopping Centre in Lower Hutt is being pulled down after the building was deemed dangerous following the 7.8-magnitude Kaikoura quake on November 14.

Commercial construction company Naylor Love has been engaged for the job and began preparations last Friday.

Queensgate owner Diversified NZ Property Trust says the focus to date has been on work within the affected building.

However, heavy machinery is now on-site ahead of the removal of the structure.

The building includes the Event Cinema complex and 300 car parks, and is one of 13 that make up the shopping centre.
