Demolition due to begin at Queensgate

Demolition of the northeast part of Queensgate Shopping Centre in Lower Hutt is due to begin.

The area containing a car park and cinemas was damaged by the 7.8 Kaikoura earthquake on November 14 and the demolition has been signalled by the building's owner and local council.

It will begin on Monday, weather permitting.

The area being demolished is a separate building to the rest of the centre, where 80 retailers are still operating and 590 car parks are available.

It will take just over two months to complete the demolition using long-reach diggers and mobile cranes.

New World Hutt City supermarket and The Angus Inn have been closed because they are across the road from the damaged part of the mall. It's likely the supermarket will reopen before Christmas the Angus Inn by early February.

Naylor Love will complete the demolition.
