Demolition of the Reading carpark in Tory Street in Wellington is due to start.

The multi-level carpark next to Reading's Courtenay Central retail and cinema complex has been cordoned off since the November 14 earthquake and is not safe to enter.

Reading International, the building owner, says the demolition will start on Monday and will take through to the end of March to complete to ground level.

There's been a lot of preparation to get the site ready for the high-reach crane, says Moana Mackey from Wellington City Council's earthquake recovery team.

"Now the crane is up, the focus is to get the carpark down safely and quickly," she says.
