Detectives probe death after bones found

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 26/05/2016

Detectives say they can't rule out the possibility a person whose bones were found on a South Island beach died in suspicious circumstances.

An investigation was launched after a member of the public found a human bone on shores just north of Timaru on Wednesday.

Search and rescue teams scouring the beach found more human remains on Thursday. A police spokeswoman told NZ Newswire the death is listed as unexplained and they couldn't rule out the possibility the person had met with foul play.

They wouldn't comment on whether the remains belonged to missing man Darryl McNee whose station wagon was found at nearby Seadown at the weekend.

Friends and family have not heard from the 44-year-old since Saturday.

Officers will continue searching the area on Friday. The remains are being forensically examined.
