Former Real Madrid stars Xabi Alonso, Angel Di Maria and Ricardo Carvalho are set to be charged with tax offences.

The public prosecutor in Madrid confirmed on Wednesday that it would bring charges against former Real Madrid trio Xabi Alonso, Angel Di Maria and Ricardo Carvalho for alleged tax offences.

It also opened an investigation into two more players: Radamel Falcao and the current Real Madrid player Fabio Coentrao.

The confirmation from the Spanish tax authorities did not mention the name of Cristiano Ronaldo whom a Europe-wide press investigation based on Football Leaks documents last week alleged had diverted 150 million euros of image rights earnings to a tax haven.

Four of the five players - the Portuguese pair Coentrao and Carvalho, Spaniard Xabi Alonso and Argentinian Angel Di Maria - played together at Real Madrid during the years 2011 and 2013.

All of them bar Alonso have been represented by the agent Jorge Mendes.
