The Argentina icon will join FIFA in recognition of his "unique" contribution to football after the 56-year-old announced plans on Facebook.

Argentine icon Diego Maradona is to be given a role at FIFA, football's ruling body confirmed on Thursday.

A FIFA spokesman said that Maradona would join "in recognition of his outstanding and unique contribution to football.

"FIFA is looking for the best way to collaborate with Diego Armando Maradona, ensuring he has a major role in FIFA's activities to promote the game across the globe, through his involvement in relevant development projects and the FIFA Legends program."

The 1986 World Cup winner Maradona, 56, had earlier said on Facebook he would be working for FIFA.

"Now it's official. Finally I can fulfill one of the lifelong dreams; to work for a clean and transparent FIFA alongside people who really love football. Thanks to all who have encouraged me to face this new challenge!" he said.

Maradona was critical of FIFA in the past but had recently endorsed the expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams, first proposed by new FIFA president Gianni Infantino. He also appeared in the legends match.
