Disability support to be overhauled

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 2/03/2017

The government is overhauling disability support services because it isn't working well for all disabled people.

Minister for Disability Issues Nicky Wagner says a "nationwide transformation" is needed and a new system will be designed over the next three months with input from the sector.

It will include personal budgets with funding from multiple government agencies, and choices about how to use it.

"This change is about ensuring disabled people and their families have greater control over their lives, as well as the support they receive from government," Ms Wagner said on Thursday.

"Rolling out this new way of working will require a significant culture change in all parts of the disability support system."
