Dive pair rescued off Wellington rocks

Two Wellington divers have been lifted off rocks after they drifted into trouble on Wellington's south coast.

The pair first rang police late on Wednesday afternoon to say their 2.5-metre dinghy's motor had broken down 100m off Red Rocks.

However, they lost cellphone contact and the police launch could not find them amid fears a strong offshore wind would blow them out into Cook Strait.

However, the men were blown to rocks at Sinclair Head, 300m from shore, says Sergeant Richard Kennedy.

One of the men had kept his cellphone in a plastic bag and was able to ring police again. A helicopter winched them off the rocks.

"This was a great result and the men were incredibly lucky they made it onto the rocks as finding them in the water could have been extremely difficult in rough conditions," Sgt Kennedy said.
