New Zealand driver Scott Dixon has extended his IndyCar series points lead with a win at the Kohler Grand Prix in Wisconsin.

After qualifying fifth fastest, Dixon (Chip Ganassi) pipped Josef Newgarden (Team Penske) by 0.57sec at the 6.4km, 14-corner rural Road America circuit at Elkhart Lake.

It was Dixon's 41st career victory, but his first win since Watkins Glen in September last year.

Dixon's No. 9 Honda held off a Penske clean sweep, edging Newgarden, pole sitter Helio Castroneves, Simon Pagenaud and Australian Will Power.

The New Zealander currently leads the IndyCar standings with 379 points to second-placed Pagenaud (345) and Castroneves (342) with seven races remaining.
