Dixon on pole for Toronto IndyCar race

NZN 16/07/2016

New Zealand driver Scott Dixon has claimed his first pole position of the IndyCar season after a slick last-ditch qualifying drive at Indy Toronto.

Dixon pushed Brazilian Helio Castroneves to second on the grid for the street race after clocking 59.9073 seconds in his final lap on Saturday.

It is a 24th career pole for Dixon, a four-time series champion who is fourth through 10 rounds this year, boosted by a third placing at last week's Iowa 300.

His qualifying drive was a godsend for his Chip Ganassi Racing team, with Team Penske drivers holding down positions two to four, including series leader Simon Pagenaud in third.

A two-time winner of the race, Dixon knows the importance of starting in front.

"Whenever you can start on the pole, especially on the street courses, it's a big help," he said.

"It's definitely pretty bumpy here and the course is a lot tighter. I think even going off two-wide at the start is going to be difficult."
