Dixon sets lap record in claiming pole

Scott Dixon © Mark J. Rebilas/USA Today Sports Scott Dixon New Zealand driver Scott Dixon has claimed the 25th pole position of his career and done it in style at the IndyCar Grand Prix in New York.

Dixon clocked a lap record in qualifying at Watkins Glen raceway, heading off Australian Will Power, who will join him on the front row of Sunday's grid.

His time of 1min 22.5259sec followed three impressive practice sessions in which Dixon's Chip Genassi Racing car has shaded the field.

The time was more than half a second quicker than the previous best at the 5.42km road course, set by American Ryan Briscoe in 2009.

Dixon is tied for 11th on the all-time pole-sitter list.

The series defending champion needs a good result in the penultimate round of the 16-leg series,

He is sixth overall, more than 100 points behind French leader Simon Pagenaud.
