Dixon sharp in final Indy500 practice

NZN 28/05/2016

Kiwi driver Scott Dixon has wrapped up his fine-tuning for the Indianapolis 500 with the third-fastest time in the final practice session at the Brickyard.

Tony Kanaan set the pace on Saturday (NZT) on a sweltering hot day in the American heartland with cars in full race trim as Chip Ganassi Racing dominated "Carb Day" at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Kanaan, the 2013 Indy 500 winner, clocked a top speed of 226.280, while teammate Dixon, the 2008 Indy 500 champion, turned in the third-best effort of 224.606.

Carlos Munoz was sandwiched between the Ganassi cars in an Andretti Autosport Honda, with 224.772.

"I'm happy with my car," said Kanaan, who will start Sunday's race on the outside of row six alongside defending champion Juan Pablo Montoya after qualifying 18th.

Dixon will start 13th for the 100th edition of the famed race, his third-worst position in 14 appearances after his Chevrolet's engine developed fuel leaks during final qualifying.

"After the struggle in qualifying, me and Dixon, we really focused on the race and I think you can see both of us up there," Kanaan said.

"Anybody counting us out, those were big mistakes."

Dixon has produced a strong start to the season, recording top-10 finishes in the opening five rounds to sit second in the championship behind Team Penske's Simon Pagenaud.
