Defending champion Scott Dixon has sounded a warning ahead of the IndyCar Grand Prix at Watkins Glen Speedway in New York.

The 36-year-old Kiwi posted the fastest lap time in practice around the re-paved 5.42km road course, clocking one minute 22.8740 seconds for his Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet team.

His time was more than five seconds faster than the official track record set in 2009 by Ryan Briscoe.

The entire field bettered the official record, which is expected to fall in qualifying on Sunday (NZT).

Team Penske's Helio Castroneves was second-fastest behind Dixon on 1:23.0327 and Will Power third with 1:23.0717.

Dixon, who has just one win from the season to date, said the newly re-paved track was running fast, with lap averages above 233 km/h.

"The (G-force) loading is through the roof," he said.

"There's no real time that you get to rest - it's a lot of fun."

Dixon sits sixth in the driver standings on 397 points with two races remaining, well astray of series leader Simon Pagenaud (Team Penske) on 529.
