The Department of Conservation has given an assurance it has a "very detailed and thorough" system for checking and maintaining its more than 13,500 structures and huts.

The Green Party's Kevin Hague has revealed that some suspension bridges, viewing platforms and other structures need repair.

He's blaming the government for cutting DoC's funding, which Conservation Minister Maggie Barry denies.

The department's director-general of operations, Mike Slater, says a detailed register of maintenance work is kept.

"None of this work currently involves issues which engineers consider pose an immediate threat to the public," he said in a statement.
