A Christchurch man who allegedly stole a car with a family dog inside has had his application for bail rejected.

Lyle Ashley Scarlett appeared in Christchurch District Court on Monday charged with two counts of stealing a vehicle and one of burglary.

Judge Brian Callaghan denied his bail application and remanded the 26-year-old in custody until his next court appearance on October 31.

It's alleged Scarlett stole a car from Waimairi Rd in Christchurch on October 3 while a family pet, Diego, was still inside.

The owners took to Facebook and their beloved pooch was found by a member of the public about 4km away later that evening.
