A dog has been mauled by another dog while on a walk in an Auckland suburb and both dogs were on leads.

A greyhound dog attacked a paperanian called Prince at the intersection of Manuka Road and Pemberton Ave in Bayview at about 8.40am on Saturday, police say.

North Shore constables Jamie Foster and Aaron Ferguson were passing in a patrol car. Constable Foster jumped out and prised the jaws of the larger dog off the throat of Prince.

Both dogs were on leads and were being walked at the time of the attack.

Prince is undergoing surgery for wounds to his neck on Saturday afternoon.

Police will speak to the owner of the greyhound.
