Three Wellington schools will received a share of a $17.5 million redevelopment.

Education Minister Hekia Parata announced on Thursday that $8m will go to Northland School, $6m will go to Churton Park School, and $3.5m will go to Brooklyn School.

Ms Parata said the investment will be welcome news by the local community, as the buildings are ageing or leaking.

"Today's announcement means over $116m has been announced over the last 14 months for school redevelopments in the Wellington area.

"This year we have also announced over $6m for 20 extra classrooms across the greater Wellington and Kapiti regions, to help accommodate roll growth."

Ms Parata said the government is committed to modernising schools and providing new classroom.

"We want to support students to achieve to the best of their potential."
