The group, who were in 13 vehicles, were criticised by some for attempting the journey near the Southland-Otago border in May when poor weather was expected.

Otago Lakes area commander Inspector Olaf Jensen revealed on Monday that the cost of rescuing the group, who were stuck for 26 hours, was $56,927, including the cost of using a Defence Force helicopter.
