Cabinet Minister Nikki Kaye is urging anyone who suspects they have breast cancer to have it dealt with immediately.

The 36-year-old is back in the Beehive after treatment following her diagnosis in September, and says she's feeling good.

She says she found a lump in her breast "pretty much by accident" and went straight to her doctor.

The results came back within a week.

"What I would say to anyone out there is don't muck around if you find something," she said on Friday on TV One's Breakfast programme.

Ms Kaye says she called the then prime minister, John Key, to tell him she had breast cancer and offered to resign.

"I was pretty broken, I thought the cabinet needs people at 100 per cent," she said.

"He was just incredible, he just said 'we're going to get through this, you're not going anywhere ... he was so strong in guiding me through this."

Prime Minister Bill English gave Ms Kaye minor portfolios in his new cabinet so she had time to fully recover.

She's expected to become education minister later this year, replacing Hekia Parata who isn't standing for re-election.
