Borussia Dortmund returned to action with a 2-1 win over 10-man Werder Bremen.

Borussia Dortmund restarted with a 2-1 win at 10-man Werder Bremen after the Bundesliga winter break on Saturday while Hoffenheim triumphed 2-0 at Augsburg to go third.

Andre Schuerrle's goal put Dortmund in front at Bremen, who had goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny sent off shortly before halftime, and Lukasz Piszczek got the winner after Fin Bartels' equaliser.

Dortmund go fourth but remain behind unbeaten Hoffenheim who won thanks to Sandro Wagner's 10th of the season and another from Andrej Kamaric.

In other games Wolfsburg beat SV Hamburg 1-0, Schalke struck late to beat Ingolstadt by the same score and Darmstadt v Borussia Moenchengladbach ended goalless.

League leaders Bayern Munich won 2-1 at Freiburg on Friday to extend their lead at the top to six points but pursuers RB Leipzig can cut the deficit at home to Eintracht Frankfurt later on Saturday.

Dortmund were without top striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who is at the African Cup of Nations but replacement Schuerrle stepped up when given the chance to lead the line.

A fortunate break of the ball sent him clear on Drobny and he calmly rounded the keeper to break the deadlock after five minutes

Drobny denied Schuerrle on two more occasions but saw red in the 38th minute of his 200th career Bundesliga game when he brutally hacked down Marco Reus.

Captain Clemens Fritz struck the bar but the 10-men of Bremen equalised on the hour as Bartels raced through the Dortmund defence from a throw and picked his spot beyond Roman Weidenfeller.

Bremen tried to hang on to a vital point but Piszczek poked home with 20 minutes remaining after a deflection fell for him in the box.
