Drink-driving mum had son on lap: police

A woman has been caught allegedly drink-driving with her three-year-old son steering the car from her lap.

The 31-year-old was pulled over in Ngaruawahia on Sunday and police say she showed no concern for her son's safety.

"This is 5pm on a Sunday - a high risk time, in a high risk location with a three-year-old on her lap. We could have lost a little kiddie," Waikato western area commander Naila Hassan said.

"It's shocking, irresponsible behaviour that puts everyone's lives at risk on the road.

"If the patrol car hadn't ben in the right place at the right time it could have been fatal."

The matter is currently before the courts.

Police say they are disappointed that poor decision making by drivers is continuing.

Small amounts of alcohol can affect driving, so people should plan to drink or drive, not both, Inspector Hassan said.
