A speeding driver has been chased by police in towns and cities throughout the South Island before being caught on foot.

The 20-year-old Nelson man was nabbed in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin, on Friday afternoon after abandoning his blue Subaru and taking off on foot.

He first failed to stop for police in Nelson.

Christchurch police then also tried to stop him.

A pursuit in Palmerston, north of Dunedin, was abandoned for safety reasons, police said.

The man will be charged with driving while disqualified and for failing to stop for police.

It is likely other driving-related charges will be laid.
