A driver is in a critical condition after a North Otago crash that police say came after a short pursuit.

They say the driver, who was driving at speed, failed to stop for police around 4.23pm on Wednesday and the pursuit began on the Herbert-Hampden Road section of Station Highway 1.

About two minutes later, the driver crossed the centre line, crashed and rolled the vehicle off the road near Palmerston.

An ambulance has been called to the scene and the driver is due to be taken by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital.

Police say that, as per procedure, the serious crash unit has been notified, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be advised.
