Driver critical after Wellington crash

Members of the public have kept the critically injured driver of a crashed car in Wellington alive until emergency services arrived.

The car crashed through a train track barrier and down a bank on Middleton Road at Glenside on Friday afternoon, police say.

The driver is in a critical condition and is being flown by a rescue helicopter to hospital.

Police thanked members of the public who kept the driver alive.

Trains are running but there are two cordons on Middleton Road around the accident and motorists are asked to take alternate routes between Tawa and Churton Park.
