A driverless electric-powered shuttle is on trial at Christchurch International Airport, but it won't be ferrying passengers around for a while yet.

The French-built Navya Shuttle started its two-year research trial on Thursday on a private airport road that's visible from the passenger terminal.

"It's exciting to see a New Zealand-initiated trial where the skills and knowledge about managing and deploying the technology will transfer to New Zealanders," said Transport Minister Simon Bridges.

HMI Technologies and the airport company are working together on the trial.
