Axed Test opener Martin Guptill has responded with his second century in two Plunket Shield innings.

Guptill raced to 151 off 138 balls for Auckland on the third day of their rain-affected match against Northern Districts in Mt Maunganui.

A knock which featured 20 fours and four sixes helped Auckland compile 348 in quick time after the hosts had declared at 417-7.

Guptill was dropped from the Black Caps Test squad to face Pakistan this month despite scoring 72 and 29 in the third and final Test against India in Indore.

The 30-year-old followed that with a Plunket Shield double of 56 and 128 not out against Wellington last week.
