Police have swooped on South Island drug dealers, seizing more than 2000 cannabis plants and preparing to lay charges against 15 people.

Involving 30 officers and running for two weeks, the operation targeted growers and dealers in Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast.

In the Nelson area, police teams searched six residential homes and six rural properties, arresting eight people and seizing two firearms and 900 plants.

They also visited 50 sites and found an indoor growing set-up.

On the West Coast, the teams found 1300 cannabis plants, including 400 on one plot of land, and seized 10 guns.

They plan to charge seven people and are waiting to speak to four more.

All the seized cannabis plants have been destroyed, police said.

Inspector Dan Mattison hailed the seizures, saying illicit drugs were having a bad impact on communities.

"People are committing dishonesty crimes such as burglary to fund their habit," he said.
