Drunk British man killed trying to take a selfie in the middle of the German autobahn

A British man has died after he was hit by a car while trying to take a selfie in the middle of a motorway in Germany.

Dean Steele, 22, from Uddingston, Lanarkshire, was struck near the town of Gudow in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein yesterday morning.

Local media reports state he was with two friends and the group had been drinking before embarking on the ill-fated prank.

Mr Steele, a British gas worker, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The group are understood to have stayed in Hamburg on Friday after watching Bundesliga 2 side St Pauli as part of a birthday weekend before travelling to Gudow via train.

Local media reports the men - who were Celtic fans - had been watching their side's match with Rangers in the hours before the tragedy.

Police spokesman Stefan Muhtz said: "The men are clearly drunk and are currently not able to be interrogated."

The 73-year-old driver of the Audi which struck the man was taken to hospital and treated for shock.

Mr Muhtz added: "He was treated on an outpatient basis and then handed over to the care of his family."

The A24 was completely blocked from 11.40am until around 3pm.
